Ancient Literature/ Wednesday September 22

I enjoyed getting to know you all a little better today. It was fun.
I am looking forward to reading your myths.

Read the Prince and the Sphinx and the Greek Princess.

Write a 800 word essay for class choosing one of the following:

1. Discuss the Egyptians obsession with the afterlife and give examples from the myths. How did this obsession affect the life of the people?

2. Compare and contrast two gods from the four myths. Explain their influence.

Please remember this will be your rough draft and we will edit in class.

There will be no vocabulary quiz next week. Use the time to work on your essay.

Read Chapters 25-33 in Uncle Tom's Cabin.

Choose one topic and write a 600 word essay. Bring your rough draft to class and we will edit together. Chandler, if you would like to email yours to me, we will edit yours also and give you our feedback. ( Chandler is our friend in Japan taking the same course by correspondence!)

Your essay should be in third person and use specifics from the book.

Here are the possible topics:
1. Discuss Stowe's use of opposites and the techniques of contrast in UTC.
2. What does the role of circumstances play in UTC?
3. In what way does the author present the incompatibility of slavery with Christianity?
4. Compare and contrast Tom's owners in the novel. (you will have to finish the book to answer this one)
5. Discuss the role of Eva in the novel. How does she contribute to the novel's message?

Read pages 119- 152 in the Pharaoh's book.

Literature: Now that you have finished all four myths, it is time to write an essay.
Choose one of the following topics and write a 500 word/ 2 typed page essay:
1. Choose two gods from one of the four myths and compare and contrast them
explaining the influence they had over the Egyptian people.
2. Using examples from the myths, explain the obsession the Egyptians
had with the afterlife.
Please make sure that you use examples from the myths.
Please bring your copy of The Epic of Gilgamesh to class.

Read chapters 1-9 in Uncle Tom's Cabin. This will not be able to be done in one night!
Make a character list as you read.
You will take a vocabulary quiz every week. The words for next week are:
