   Choose from one of the following:

   a. What was harder in the book, public or private guilt? Give specific examples.

   b. Compare the present view of adultery to that of a Puritan society. How is it exhibited in The Scarlet Letter?  

   c. What was the significance of the "scarlet letter"? What did it mean to Hester? What did it mean to the community? Give specific examples from the text.
